The dialectics of zero pollution plans and expanding chemical productivity(零污染计划与化学生产力扩张的辩证关系)

On a global scale, ambitious "zero pollution" plans are becoming the core goal of environmental policies, aimed at completely eliminating the risks of chemicals to natural ecology and human health. However, at the same time, the global production and diversity of chemicals continue to grow rapidly to meet the needs of social development. This contradiction constitutes the core topic of this lecture.

Professor Andreas Schaeffer will delve into this profound dialectical relationship based on his decades of in-depth research in environmental chemistry, pollutant metabolism, and ecological risk assessment. The lecture will explore the limits of our current scientific knowledge and technological capabilities in pursuit of the grand goal of "zero pollution". For example, the issue of "non extractable residues" of chemicals - residues that cannot be detected and analyzed by conventional methods in the environment, but whose structure and bioavailability information are crucial - is a huge challenge to achieving precise risk assessment and true "zero pollution".

On the other hand, the expansion of productivity in the chemical industry has not only led to an increase in the number of known chemicals, but also the continuous introduction of new substances (such as nanomaterials) and complex transformation products, making environmental monitoring and assessment tasks unprecedentedly complex. Professor Schafer will argue that simple slogans of "end of pipe treatment" or "zero emissions" may be insufficient and even misleading in the face of complex environmental systems and economic growth demands.

This lecture aims to spark critical thinking on how we can reconcile these seemingly opposing goals within the framework of sustainable chemical management? Professor Schaeffer will propose that the future path lies not in pursuing an absolute utopia without chemical risks, but in developing smarter chemical designs, establishing assessment systems based on overall ecosystem health, and promoting innovation in "green detoxification" technologies for chemicals. Ultimately, achieving the transition from linear pollution to circular ecology is the key to resolving this dialectical contradiction.

   Andreas Schaeffer

Andreas Schäffer was trained as chemist and finished his PhD-thesis in 1984. He worked as postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, Boston/USA, and at the University of Zürich, Switzerland, in the field of bio-inorganic chemistry. From 1989-1997 he worked as researcher in an agrochemical company. Afterwards he became professor for Environmental Biology and Chemodynamics at the technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen). His research interests relate to the metabolism of organic xenobiotics, such as pesticides and other chemicals and nano-materials in soil, water and sediments, plants and other organisms. One focus of research are non-extractable residues of chemicals usually lacking information on structure and bioavailability. Another area of interest is testing the effects of pollutants on the communities of terrestrial and aquatic organisms.

Since 2003 he is in addition director of the Research Institute for Environmental Analysis and Assessment, gaiac, in Aachen/Germany (www.gaiac. rwth-aachen.de), a spin-off company of the university group. In 2012 and 2014 he became adjunct and honorary professor at Nanjing and Chongqing universities, respectively. He served as expert for the environmental risk assessment of chemicals in national and international panels. He has published more than 200 papers, and three text books.

《Environmental Science and Pollution Research》编委、《Soils》编委、《Environmental Science: Advances》编委。

Research progress on the eco-environment of the Three Gorgeous Reservoir(三峡库区生态环境研究进展)

The construction and operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the world's largest hydropower project, have brought profound changes to its regional eco-environment. This presentation synthesizes the extensive research progress made in understanding these impacts over the past two decades. While the project has yielded significant benefits in flood control, power generation, and navigation, it has also induced a complex set of environmental challenges. Key research findings highlight major shifts in water quality, including recurrent algal blooms in tributary bays driven by nutrient enrichment and hydrological stabilization. A critical emerging issue is the significant impact on the "Gorges Reservoir Eco-environment Network" (GREEN), encompassing biodiversity loss in aquatic ecosystems, soil erosion in the fluctuating zone, and the accumulation of pollutants in sediments. Recent research has focused on monitoring, modeling, and mitigating these effects through measures such as optimized dam operation, ecological restoration of the water-level fluctuation zone, and watershed management practices. This review concludes that future research must prioritize integrated basin management, long-term ecological forecasting, and the development of adaptive strategies to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the TGR's eco-environment.
